Silence. Silence was all he needed in the world. It was spectacular.
So long had he spent out in the field that he’d forget was silence was like. Out there, there was nothing but a cacophony of soldiers screaming, boots trudging, and metal clanking. In here, however, there were only books as far as the eye could see and silence. With the exception, of course, of the occasional sound of footsteps or chairs scraping against the wooden floor.
The Predigio Library wasn’t the biggest den of knowledge in Asvalagia nor the most popular among scholars and well-read citizens. No, the library was more akin to a great hall with several rows of entirely too-tall bookshelves.
Quintis pulled out a book from one of the many shelves and tossed it among a growing tower which included titles such as The Devil’s in the Details, Mysterium Arcanum, The Science of War, Breakthroughs in Alchemy, and his most recent pick the Codex Ocularum. Picking them up, he shuffled along to the next row of shelves.
Books on topics related to medicine were scattered about. Quintis let his finger slide across their spines as he read their titles, stopping only when he found a particular book. “Oh, well hello…”
One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi.
Clearly, the book was out of place. Or was it? Quintis opened it, shuffled to a random page that depicted a large, detailed sketch of a dotted mushroom and some text. Not having expected such a fine, large drawing, curiosity overtook him and so he continued to read it right then and there.
