[attr="class","nodensright1"]SUBJECT BACKGROUND [attr="class","nodensright21"] [attr="class","nodensright22"] These days, the only people who call her Amaryllis are turncoats and Imperial scum. It's the name they print on wanted posters and disseminate to their officers, most often as a footnote to the real threat: Losstarot, the rebel cell she commands. Her comrades and confidants know her as Maryl, and after seven years as an ardent member of the resistance, many of them know her as a fierce and trusted veteran in the struggle for Tellahn sovereignty.[break][break] To those under her command, she's a mentor as well as a leader, the sort who expects a lot from those in her company and gives just as much back. She has a particular soft spot for those displaced and orphaned by war, and has made Losstarot as much of a found family as she can. In her off-hours, she can often be found in resistance-friendly alehouses, carousing and appraising the potential of new recruits at the same time. While she takes an active role in anti-imperial military action, she's canny enough with people to keep the fresh blood flowing and maintain Losstarot's seat at the Alliance table.[break][break] Plenty of people don't care for that one bit.[break][break] There are rumours, too, about Losstarot. Seven years is a long time, and what's a revolution without a little bloodshed? Maybe it's more their historical unwillingness to play politics that has caused whispers to spread in the Alliance. Maryl in particular is not one to brook any kind of injustice, and her brazen criticism of the Tellah ruling elite has earned her several highborn detractors. Some say that insurrection against the Empire won't satisfy her. Those in the know call her a heretic, marked for blood.[break][break] It's a half truth, at best. There's room in Maryl's heart for reverence, a space carved into her while she was growing up. Her hometown was as religious as it was insular, and she was raised in an important ceremonial position, taught to make sacrifices to call on the divine power of Aeons. When she was 19 and the Empire came to raze her hometown to the ground, they asked her to draw upon all their teachings to keep them safe; they told her this was the day they had prepared her for, the day they hoped would never come to pass. They asked her to sacrifice her life.[break][break] Maryl saved herself instead. The Aeon left her a gift anyway, in the form of a mark upon her back. The Blood-Sin is meant to hold magic, but so far as she knows, it holds only the haunting memory of the dead and the steel of her own resolve.[break][break] The naysayers aren't likely to stop her any time soon. |
